node A device on a network that has an address and can send and/
or receive data to and from other devices on the network. Also
refers to a number that identifies an access point on a
network. It works like an address.
On-Hook You can dial a telephone/fax number or hear the other party,
but cannot talk to them. You can also send or receive a fax
manually when [On-Hook] is selected.
paper jam A paper or media misfeed or jam occurring in the machine
during printing.
Pathway The route or sequence a user is required to select buttons to
display a service, such as Copy or Fax.
PCL An abbreviation of Printer Control Language, which is used by
Hewlett-Packard. This is a set of commands that tells a printer
how to print a document.
PCONSOLE A NetWare utility that can be used to create, configure,
monitor, and manage queues on a NetWare server, and to
attach print servers to the queues.
PDF An abbreviation of Portable Document Format. It is a file
format developed by Adobe Systems. A PDF file can describe
documents containing text and images, retaining all the
formatting and fonts of the original copy. The document can
then be displayed or printed, using application software,
hardware, or operating system, which may differ from that
used to create the original document.
PDL An abbreviation of Page-Description Language. This refers to
a programming language, such as PostScript, that is used to
describe output to a printer or a display device, which then
uses the instructions from the PDL to construct text and
graphics and create the required page image.
Peer-to-Peer A network environment in which the nodes communicate
directly with other nodes. Windows for Workgroups, NetWare
Lite, and Macintosh System 7 are examples of peer-to-peer
networking products.
photograph An image, especially a positive print, recorded by a camera
and reproduced on a photosensitive surface.
polling A feature that allows you to retrieve a document from a remote
machine.
POP3 An abbreviation of Post Office Protocol Version 3, a protocol
used for receiving e-mail. It is a commonly used
communications protocol (an agreement governing the way
data is transmitted). It provides a private mailbox on the
provider e-mail server that receives messages when a
connection is made. POP3 is a receive-only function, while the
corresponding function for sending e-mail is SMTP.
portrait The image orientation on a sheet of paper, where the long
edge of the paper runs from top to bottom.
